Gacked frombibliofile.

My own context: My parents grew up in the Depression. My paternal grandfather was definitely blue collar, a sometime cowboy, bootlegger, plumber. I don't really know about my maternal grandparents; I remember their house as being fairly sizable and my mother went to university. On the other hand, she worked 3rd shift at Western Union throughout school.

The introduction: This is based on the original paper (NB: MS Word .DOC format), by Will Barratt, Meagan Cahill, Angie Carlen, Minnette Huck, Drew Lurker, Stacy Ploskonka at Indiana State University. So the questions are slightly different from what's been floating on LJ.

Note that this was originally a college class exercise, where if one of the questions below applied to you, you were to take a step forward, while being able to see your classmates.

Bold are ones that apply to me. Italics are ones that don't. Regular is my commentary.

When I was in college:
If your father went to college, take a step forward.
If your father finished college
My father was getting a 2 year degree in computer programming when I was born. He also took college courses for fun. However, he never received a 4 year degree.

If your mother went to college
If your mother finished college
My mother also attended a semester or two of law school. Dad paid for a semester with a single game of Craps. Dada didn't complete law school because she had no desire to be a paralegal.

If you have any relative who is an attorney, physician, or professor.

If you were the same or higher class than your high school teachers

If you had a computer at home
If you had your own computer at home
I graduated college in 1982. It was '84 or '85 before I got my first PC. However, my boyfriend, Ethan, had built an IMSAI from a kit.

If you had more than 50 books at home
If you had more than 500 books at home
Not entirely certain about the 500 but it seems like a safe bet.

If were read children's books by a parent
Dad used to read to me. When I got old enough to read myself, he still read to me but not children's books per se. I remember him reading Greek history to me from some Time-Life like book when I was 6 or 7.

If you ever had lessons of any kind
I was horse mad and I used to get lessons at Christmas and birthdays so it wasn't a regular thing.

If you had more than two kinds of lessons

If the people in the media who dress and talk like me are portrayed positively
I'm pretty certain I've never seen my clone in the media.

If you had a credit card with your name on it

If you have less than $5000 in student loans
If you have no student loans
My university, Roosevelt,  was sufficiently impressed with my test scores that I had a full ride. I also worked for the school enough hours that I had to sign a document formally declining tuition reimbursement.

If you went to a private high school

If you went to summer camp
I went to Camp Hastings, a YMCA camp, for two weeks between 5th and 6th grade. I didn't enjoy it. I also attended a summer science program in Astronomy at the U of Iowa after both my sophomore and junior years of HS. That was more fun.

If you had a private tutor

If you have been to Europe
I am counting England as part of Europe. pilgham loaned me money for my first trip which was to visit him at school. I felt bad borrowing the money but at least I was sure he wanted to see me. I'm not sure if this was my junior or senior year of college.

If your family vacations involved staying at hotels
Some vacations we stayed with relatives. Driving vacartions we stayed at motels. On rare occasions, generally when Dad'd work was footing part of the bill, we stayed in actual hotels.

If all of your clothing has been new and bought at the mall
I wore a dress I found in the garbage to two years of junior high. My mother sewed for me and I sewed for myself once I learned.

If your parents bought you a car that was not a hand-me-down from them
I was out of uni before I ever got a driver's license.

If there was original art in your house
My folks went more for Remington style prints. We also had a bust of Robert E. Lee that my mother bought at a going-out-of-business sale thinking it was Grant.

If you had a phone in your room
For my parents convenience, I had my own line. They paid the base charges and I paid any long distance. Since my two big romances were with a buy from Sebeka, MN and a guy I could only call at his grandmother's in Landbeach, East Anglia, this was a consideration.

If you lived in a single family house
If your parent own their own house or apartment

If you had your own room
Only daughter so I didn't have to share even when my brothers did.

If you participated in an SAT/ACT prep course

If you had your own cell phone in High School
That was James Bond stuff.

If you had your own TV in your room in High School
If you opened a mutual fund or IRA in High School or College

If you have ever flown anywhere on a commercial airline

If you ever went on a cruise with your family
They took me on ferries in Puget Sound?

If your parents took you to museums and art galleries
I wasn't too interested in art museums and I'm still not, but Daddy would take me to the Museums of Science and Indiustry and Natural History and small random museums.

If you were unaware of how much heating bills were for your family.
My folks didn't believe in talking about such things in front of kids but I was aware that paying the bill was not a hardship.

Asmodeus is back in business and I didn't have to buy a new motherboard!

I think it's very romantic that pilgham loaned you the money to visit him in England. That's so sweet.

I thought so. Like I said, it did make me feel like he really wanted me to come rather than just being polite.

I went to see him at least one other time, possibly 2, and paid my own way those times.
