Maybe It's Just Me ...

... but 'Baby' sucks as a term of endearment. Sure it's a diminutive but in an overly patronizing way and during sex it's just perverted.

No, this was caused by bad!fic not by pilgham.

Can't picture pilgham calling you 'baby' and surviving unscathed...for me, the term is right up there with 'my old lady', 'the wife' or 'the little woman'.

During sex? Eeyew. Maybe that's what the character was expressing a desire to have as an outcome of the activity?

Obviously! That's what Inuyasha really wants. Otherwise, he wouldn've stuck with the inucest relationship.

I only wish.

And you are correct. Pilgham's sense of self-preservation is far too strong to call me 'Baby', 'the old lady' or 'the little woman'. Though he does occasionally call me 'Kitten' in an ironical post-modern fashion.

Come to think of it, that does seem to be a bit of an odd comment to make during sex.

Unless the speaker is a pedophile or a hooker with a john with a fetish that, quite frankly, squicks me but is better than the first alternative.

Whew! Glad to hear it was bad!fic - for a moment there, I was wondering if I'd stumbled across something intensely personal.

The term doesn't bother me if it's used in the right context/setting. As in 'Oooh, baby, that feels so damn good!' I find it far more retch-worthy when authors use 'bitch' as a term of endearment.

Of course, it depends on who's saying it, right?

It's just one of my many idiosyncracies that I hate 'Baby' as a term of address. At least 'Bitch' has connotations of respect but, yeah, not so much an endearment.

Ah, but nothing makes it past "my little poopsie" for causing the urge to kill.

Second to that is the odd thing of couples using such sicko terms as "Honey" or "Sweetheart" in place of somebodies name all the time. I've run in to people who do that and I don't ever like them.

I think baby sounds like something you'd say when whining - 'But baaaby...'. What about 'babe' - I use it but it's not very nice is it?

That's just because of Ozzie and Harriet.

I watched The Honeymooners.

*shudders* I don't find "baby" the least bit romantic. Reminds me of something from an aweful R&B song :P And during sex? *gags* Total pet peeve. I'm SO glad my husband doesn't use the phrase! This reminds me of my pet peeve of a complete stranger refering to me as "dear" or something of the like. I HATE-HATE-HATE-HATE-HATE THAT!!!!!! Especially when it's used in a condenscending way.

Word! It's always condescending!

Baby, if you've ever wondered. . .wondered whatever became of me. . .I'm livin' on the air in Cincinatti, Cincinatti, WKRP.
